While many black people around the world are excited about the release of ‘Black Panther’, the first major film on a black superhero, Nigerians can now join the joy as  Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, has been casted in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity Wars.

Akindele’s name was published on IMDB, where it was revealed she will be an unnamed member of the Dora Milaje. Meaning ‘The Adored Ones’, Dora Milaje members are highly skilled in the use of various weapons and styles of martial art. It is a team of women who serve as personal bodyguards of the Black Panther, the spiritual leader of Wakanda.

Akindele, however, has said nothing about the movie feature.Other big names in the movie set to be released later in 2018 are Scarlett Johansson, Bernicio Del Toro and Chris Evans. Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel feature in voice acting roles.

In the sequel to Avengers: Age of Ultron , Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.

​‘We won’t accept insults from Trump’ – Nana Addo

President Akufo-Addo has condemned US President, Donald Trump for recent derogatory remarks he reportedly made against African countries, saying Ghana will “not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country.”

Trump’s alleged description of some nations on the continent as ‘shithole countries’ has not sat well with many, including a number of world leaders who have called on Mr. Trump to retract his comments and issue an apology.

According to Democratic Senator, Dick Durbin, Trump, during a meeting at the White House to consider migrant policies, said, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

The alleged remarks were said to have also been made in reference to Haiti and El Salvador.

President Trump has since rejected the claims against him in a series of tweets but White House communicators have however failed to categorically deny that he made those comments.

Describing the comments as “extremely unfortunate” , President Nana Addo categorically stated that Ghana is “certainly not a racist country.”

“The language of @realDonaldTrump that the African continent, Haiti and El Salvador are shithole countries is extremely unfortunate. We are certainly not a “shithole country”. We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful,” the President said in a tweet.

Mahama slams ‘racist’ Trump, urges action from AU

President Nana Addo’s comments came hours after former President Mahama described President Trump as racist for his remarks.

“Africans and Haitians come from ‘shithole’ countries? Isn’t Trump demonstrating that he’s nothing but a racist and pursuing a policy of ‘Make America White Again’? I congratulate Botswana for showing the way. Our AU Presidents must respond strongly to this insult,” Mr. Mahama said in a tweet.

Botswana summons US Ambassador over Trump’s comment

Meanwhile government of Botswana has summoned the US ambassador of its country to express its displeasure at the comments and asked the ambassador to clarify if Botswana “is regarded as a ‘shithole’ country” in lieu of the alleged comments from President Trump.

‘Trump’s comments dishonor American creed’

The African Union has also said it was alarmed by President Trump’s vulgar statement.

“Given the historical reality of how many Africans arrived in the United States as slaves, this statement flies in the face of all accepted behaviour and practice,” AU spokeswoman Ebba Kalondo said to the Associated Press.

The body has since issued a statement calling for the US leader to apologise for the remarks.

It said the “remarks dishonour the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity”.

“While expressing our shock, dismay and outrage, the African Union strongly believes that there is a huge misunderstanding of the African continent and its people by the current Administration,” the AU added.

A lawyer 'downplays' Martin Amidu's appointment to manage the office of special prosecutor in Ghana.

A Private Legal Practitioner and Greater Accra Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC, Edudzi Tamaklo has raised doubts over Martin Amidu’s ability to deliver on his mandate as Special Prosecutor given his limited success when he served as Attorney General.
Martin Amidu was named as the Special Prosecutor by the President on Thursday January 11, 2018.
He is expected to be approved by Parliament in the coming days.
Though many have since commended the President’s nomination, with some describing it as a masterstroke, Mr. Tamakloe believes Mr. Amidu will not bring anything new to the table, given that he failed to prosecute many corruption-related cases when he served as Attorney General under former President, John Evans Atta Mills.
“What we cannot also take away is the fact that the conduct of the person appointed is there for all to see. You cannot dismiss those concerns. With the greatest respect, he was the Attorney General from 1992 to 2000 until he became running mate to Prof. Mills. Maybe. Can you tell me the number of corruption cases that he prosecuted? Having become the Attorney General to Prof. Mills, we all do know the number of criminal cases that he prosecuted so where is this business?”

‘Celebrate Amidu’s appointment’
Mr. Tamakloe’s comment comes despite a call by the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey for the NDC to celebrate the nomination of a member of their party, Martin Amidu, as the country’s first Special Prosecutor.
According to him, the NDC should be happy because President Akufo-Addo has found the kind of quality needed to fight corruption in the country within the opposition party, describing it as a good sign.
“…It is good for the party to rather celebrate that they have a person that they made, that they shaped. He stood against them on principle and it’s good that their opponent who is in power now has seen that quality and wants to put it to greater use of the country. I think that is commendable,” he added.
About Special Prosecutor office
President Akufo-Addo signed into law, the Bill setting up the Special Prosecutor office after it was approved by Parliament in November 2017.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor marks the fulfilment of a major campaign promise of Nana Akufo-Addo in the run-up to the 2016 elections aimed at fighting corruption.
But members of the opposition NDC had complained that the office cannot be independent if the Special Prosecutor was going to be a loyalist of the NPP.
The President in announcing Amidu, said he received the nomination from the Attorney General Gloria Akuffo, and has accepted the nominee, whose name will be forwarded to Parliament for approval when the House reconvenes from recess.
“The Attorney General is by a letter dated to me Thursday 11th January 2018 addressed to me exercised her power of nomination and submitted to me for my acceptance the name of the proposed special prosecutor. I have accepted the Attorney General’s nomination and will, in turn, submit for Parliament’s approval when it reconvenes on 23rd of January 2018 for its first meeting of this New Year the name of Martin Alamisi Benz Kaiser Amidu to be the first Special Prosecutor under the law,” he said.
The President noted that, Mr. Amidu has the requisite integrity and independence of character to occupy such challenging office.
“I have done so because I am fully convinced that Mr. Martin Amidu, a prominent legal personality who held the high office of the Attorney General of the Republic in the government of the late President John Evans Attah Mills has the requisite integrity, competence, courage and independence of character to discharge effectively the responsibilities of this office.”

Ghana is not a 'shithole' country - Nana Addo

Ghanaian leader Nana Akufo-Addo has condemned in plain language the “shithole” comment of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mr Trump described El Salvador, Haiti and certain African nations as “shithole” countries during a meeting with lawmakers at the White House on Thursday.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Mr Trump asked, after being presented with a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from those countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal. The Washington Post reported the remarks citing aides briefed on the meeting.

Trump demanded to know why the US would accept immigrants from these countries rather than places like Norway, whose prime minister he had met the day before.

Mr Trump has received international condemnation for his comment, one of those criticisms coming from Botswana, whose Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation called on the US's ambassador to Botswana "to express its displeasure at the alleged utterances made by the President of the US."

The ministry also asked the ambassador to clarify whether the US regarded Botswana as a "shithole" country, adding that Trump's comments were "highly irresponsible, reprehensible, and racist."

Mr Trump, on Friday, however, denied making those comments. "The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!"

Reacting to the “shithole” comment, Ghana’s president said: “The language of US President Donald Trump that the African continent, Haiti and El Salvador are ‘shithole countries’ is extremely unfortunate. Ghana is certainly not a ‘shithole country’. We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful.”

Former Ghanaian leader John Mahama has also condemned the comment saying it betrayed Mr Trump’s racist agenda to make America a white-only country and urged leaders of African Union countries to respond to the American leader as Botswana earlier did.
